What Does the Bible Say About Halloween

Growing up as a child, my parents would not let my sisters and I celebrate Halloween. It never bothered us much, plus growing up on the island of the Bahamas people there never celebrate it as big as America do. It was not safe to do so, plus my parents knew the evil behind Halloween and never wanted us to be a part of that. Thank you Jesus!!!

The “world” make Halloween seem like its something fun… dressing up in funny costumes, getting candies, partying and enjoying time with friends… its harmless fun! But the truth is Halloween represents an opportunity to embrace the evil, devilish, dark side of the spiritual world. As Christians you and I are placed in this world to be a light in a world of darkness.

Christians should be teaching their children (age appropriately) that: there is a spiritual world filled with goodness from God and evil from Satan (Eph. 2:1-10); life with Christ has power over darkness (I John 4:4); and those who celebrate Halloween either are unaware of its roots, or what it consist of, or are intentionally promoting a world where evil is lauded and viewed as an ultimate power.

Rather than “hide” in the face of evil, we should unabashedly and boldly create an alternative that is positive and uplifting; that celebrates good over evil and the triumph of God over Satan. We need to provide an environment that also makes room for heaps of fun while using the day as a “teachable moment” to celebrate God’s protection, provision and purpose for our lives.

So What Does the Bible Say? The bible doesn’t mention Halloween or anything about it but it do tells us NOT to partake in evil works and Halloween celebrates just that, EVIL!

“Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 19:31)

“And the person who turns to mediums and familiar spirits, to prostitute himself with them, I will set My face against that person and cut him off from his people. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 20:6-7)

“There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, or one who practices witchcraft, or a soothsayer, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, or one who conjures spells, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. For all who do these things are an abomination to the Lord, and because of these abominations the Lord your God drives them out from before you. You shall be blameless before the Lord your God.” (Deuteronomy 18:10-13)

“Therefore do not be partakers with them. For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness, righteousness, and truth), finding out what is acceptable to the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather expose them.” (Ephesians 5:7-11)

“Abstain from every form of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:22)

For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness, Nor shall evil dwell with You. (Psalm 5:4)

So, whatever you do this Halloween ask yourself these questions.

What would Jesus do?
I’m I entertaining Evil or Satan?
Will I be mastered by this?
Is it helpful to me?
Will this help me to become a better Christian, a better friend, a better brother or sister?

“All things are lawful for me, but all things are not helpful. All things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any.” (1Corinthians 6:12)

God gives us the freedom to do what we want to do, but if whatever we do would make others and/ ourselves fall, we should not do or partake in it

Ask yourself, Does it glorify God?
Can this activity glorify God in some way?

1 Corinthians 10:31 tells us, “So, whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.”

Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

So as Christians, Is there no other way to reach out to these lives that need to be saved? Is Halloween to you the only way you feel is easy for you to reach out to them because they are coming to your “door step”? As we walk with Christ each and every day God allows someone to come to our “door step”. This happens on a consistent bases, could be your Co-workers, a teller at a bank, your neighbor, the waiter you had at lunch time when you went to your favorite restaurant, at a gasoline station the guy next to you that was pumping gas as well etc. (are you reaching out to them in creative ways?)

I think as so called “Christians” we find ways to compromise our beliefs, we find reasons or excuses to make it seem like its ok. Don’t make it seem like Halloween is the only time of the year that you can reach out to lives. I don’t celebrate halloween, like it was said before we are in this world, we are not from it.

Jesus spoke these words, lifted up His eyes to heaven, and said: “Father, the hour has come. Glorify Your Son, that Your Son also may glorify You,… I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth. (John 17:1, 14-17)
